Academic Support PBB, (Learning Disabilities
Specialist), position number 0078262, UHM Student Affairs,
(Manoa), full-time, general funds, to begin approximately August
18, 2008. Duties: This position will join a team of
professionals in the KOKUA Program, charged with providing a
range of access services to students with disabilities, in
support of the University’s strategic goals and to ensure
compliance with Federal and State mandates. Within the team,
this position will contribute expertise on learning disabilities
and other cognitive disabilities. The Learning Disabilities
Specialist will develop and deliver a range of access services
tailored to individual student needs; review documentation to
determine eligibility for services; provide diagnostic testing
and prepare evaluative reports; advise students on appropriate
learning strategies and arrange for accommodations for academic
access; maintain confidential records and files; train students
on alternative techniques, skills, and study methods; work
cooperatively with faculty and staff to insure smooth delivery
of access services; conduct periodic progress assessments and
provide remediation as needed; increase awareness concerning
learning disabilities and provide training workshops for faculty
and staff; keep abreast of knowledge in the field and advise the
KOKUA Director on needed changes in programming, policies,
procedures, or resources; work cooperatively with other program
staff to meet needs of KOKUA students during peak service demand
periods, e.g. during advising and registration, faculty liaison
at the beginning of the semester, and testing accommodation
during final examinations; other duties as assigned. Minimum
qualifications: Possession of a baccalaureate degree in
education, psychology, or rehabilitation counseling with a
concentration in learning disabilities and 2 years of
progressively responsible professional experience with
responsibilities for providing educational access services in
higher education to students with learning disabilities; or
equivalent education/training or experience. Considerable
working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the
field of learning disabilities as demonstrated by the broad
knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving
concepts, principles and methodologies. Considerable working
knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state
laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated
with educational access services in post-secondary education.
Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems
through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately
determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the
problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and
ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by
preparation of reports and other materials. Demonstrated ability
to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and
members, and individuals. Demonstrated ability to operate a
personal computer and apply word processing software. For
supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates,
manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee
relations. Ability to apply diverse teaching strategies
appropriate to individual learning styles. Ability to administer
and interpret commonly used diagnostic instruments, e.g.
Woodcock Johnson III (both parts), WAIS III, Wide-Range
Achievement Test, Nelson-Denny Reading Test, and/or the Test of
Nonverbal Intelligence. Ability to create and maintain
appropriate records for the purposes of evaluation and
accountability. Understanding of diverse backgrounds and
challenges of students with a broad range of physical,
psychological, and cognitive disabilities. Ability to establish
and maintain rapport with students. Ability to develop and
incorporate current technology into both the teaching and
evaluation process. Knowledge and experience with accommodations
and support services typically provided to students with
disabilities in post-secondary education. Ability to work
cooperatively and effectively with other specialists in a team
environment. Ability to maintain the confidentiality of student
records in compliance with applicable state and federal laws.
Ability to work cooperatively with faculty and staff to insure
smooth delivery of access services. Any equivalent combination
of education and/or professional work experience which provides
the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as
indicated. Desirable qualifications: Post-baccalaureate
degree in pertinent field. Pay range: Pay Band B, minimum
